Energy Vampires

Energy vampires can be anywhere and everywhere - family, friends, clients, colleagues, neighbors. They come in many types:
-The Blamer who lays blame on everyone else without ever taking any responsibility.
-The Guilt trippers use shame to get what they want.
-The Ever-Jealous can never genuinely feel happiness for anyone else.
-The Insecure ones who pull others down to their level of low self-esteem.
-The Fun Haters seem unable to embrace joy.
-The Bullies stomp on the little guys to elevate their egos.
-The Downers, the Whiners, the Short-Tempers, the Gossipers.

Whatever the type they all have one thing in common, and that is to suck the energy out of you.
Here is how to break the cycle:

1. Identify: I would be willing to bet that one person popped into your mind as soon as you read the title to this post. Some vampires are easy to identify but others have a subtle way of draining your energy. Pay attention to how you feel when thinking about someone and how you feel after speaking or meeting with them as you may be able to identify a few patterns.

2. Set Boundaries: Once you identify the vampires you will need to set boundaries. There are some people that will turn your day sour with a glance, and you should attempt to avoid these people at all costs if possible. Others may be a slight nuisance and their "power" could be limited by avoiding eye contact or by avoiding conversation when possible. It will be up to you to determine the limits because each relationship is so specific.

3. Step Back: Learning to step away from situations that have the potential to expose you to the vampires can be very helpful. Practice saying no people that place you in uncomfortable situations.
